Philips Launches Lumify Smart Ultrasound Solution in the U.S.
Philips, the Dutch technology company headquartered in Amsterdam, has decided to launch its new Lumify ultraportable smartphone or tablet powered ultrasound system in the U.S.
Ultrasound is a type of imaging that is very popular for diagnosis of many conditions. It uses high-frequency sound waves to look at organs inside the body and create images for diagnosis. Clinicians use it to view the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, liver, and other organs. Doctors also use ultrasound to view the fetus during pregnancy.

According to the company, the system includes a couple of transducers that plug directly into the USB port of a compatible smartphone or tablet. The matching Lumify mobile app is then used to select and adjust various settings and to perform the ultrasound scans on a patient.

The Lumify works on a subscription model. Using the application, new transducers can be obtained, as well as various subscription types, training, and services. Packages start at $199 per month.

The app is helpful to share the ultrasound images and reports with other doctors, to make notations, and to email scans to patients. The system comes with either the L12-4 broadband linear array transducer or the C5-2 broadband curved array transducer, at 12 to 4 MHz extended operating frequency range and 5 to 2 MHz, respectively.
