People Gather to Highlight the Need for More Organ Donation

A University of Michigan group advocating for organ donations has formed a line — to highlight the line of people waiting for transplants. They were standing in line to make a point: 3,500 Michigan patients are waiting today for an organ transplant. Wolverines for Life, which organized the demonstration, also said 22 people die each day in the U.S. because not enough organs are available.

"We wanted to create a line where there shouldn't be a line. We don't think people should have to wait for life-saving donation," said the director of the University of Michigan Transplant Center, Dr. John Magee.

Organizers, who also advocate for tissue, eye, blood and bone marrow donation, say nobody should die on a waiting list. They encourage people to donate blood and sign up for the Michigan Organ Donor Registry.

In Michigan alone more than 35-hundred people are currently waiting for a replacement organ, blood or bone marrow transplant. More than 41,000 blood donations are needed every day in the United States, according to Wolverines for Life.
