Parents Against Vaccination Hold Pox Parties to Build Natural Immunity in Children

Parents are risking their kids’ lives by deliberately exposing them to childhood diseases at "pox parties", warned the Australian Medical Association.Anti-vaccination parties or pox parties are gaining popularity in the US, where children are being exposed to persons infected with diseases like chickenpox to build natural defense instead of getting vaccinated.

Australian Medical Association Queensland president Chris Zappala said, "It is a worrying new trend. There is risk attached to these infections and it is completely unavoidable."

He also added that the severity of these illnesses is still being underestimated and exposing children to such diseases could actually kill them.

"Chickenpox is usually milder in children, but it can result in serious complications and even death. Exposing your children to disease in the hope of developing their immunity is terribly misinformed," he said.

Therefore, he urged parents to immunize children instead of exposing them to these devastating diseases. Also, the complications associated with immunization are lesser compared to chickenpox.
