Paramedics may be Allowed to Dispense Drugs Soon

Under a new proposal that aims to revamp currently available emergency services, paramedics in the UK may soon be allowed to dispense drugs to patients.

This initiative is being undertaken after a report showed that demand for emergency services in the NHS has increased by 6.5% a year and that it was costing an additional 60 million pounds.

"Ambulance Services received over 7 million 999 calls last year," said Liz Kendall, the director of the Ambulance Service Network, part of the NHS Confederation. "The number of calls is increasing by around 6.5% annually – that's 300,000 more patients every year. Many of these patients are older people who have fallen and patients with chronic conditions who could be better cared for in the community or at home."

The idea is to send paramedics to homes so that patients can be dealt with there instead of being transported to the hospital.
