Over-the-Counter Pain Killers Must Have Miscarriage Warnings : TGA

Therapeutics Good Authority (TGA), Australian drug regulatory body has issued miscarriage warnings on the use of popular painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen, diclofenac, mefenamic acid and naproxen for women who are in their early pregnancy.// TGA also stated that relevant data suggests the increased risk of miscarriage being associated when these drugs are taken during the early time of conception.

According to a Canadian study in 2011, the risk of miscarriage was found to be higher in those women who were taking NSAIDS during pregnancy.

The regulatory body has proposed warnings on oral non aspirin NSAIDS "Do not use if likely to become pregnant, or during the first six months of pregnancy except on doctor's advice. Do not use at all during the last three months of pregnancy."

TGA has also said that the warnings issued on aspirin did not require any change and has adviced people to read the label and follow the instructions before taking any drug. The regulatory body also works with pharmaceutical companies to include advisory statements on packaging addressing the risk of miscarriage. These warnings do not apply to topical creams, sprays and gels.
