Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament, was informed on Wednesday that more than 60 per cent posts of lady doctors were lying vacant at community health centers located in rural areas in India.
Panabaka Lakshmi, minister of state for health and family, admitted that there was a shortage of lady doctors. In a written reply, the minister confirmed that, as against the requirement of a total of 4,045 gynecologists and obstetricians, only 1357 were posted."The facility of these doctors is available at Primary Health Centers (PHC) which are manned by medical officers," the minister said. She added that, as against the requirement of 22,370 doctors at PHCs, 22,608 were deployed.
”A total of 3,417 PHCs are functioning with lady doctors," the minister said.
