Osteoarthritis Risk High in Women

by Rajashri on Oct 6 2009 9:06 PM

Osteoarthritis is one of the commonest diseases affecting the joints and the symptoms usually occur with increasing age. Up to the age of 55 women are not usually affected by this disease, but after menopause, the risk is especially high.

Many studies have linked the onset of menopause with weight gain, which in turn increases the risk of osteoarthritis. A recent study says that osteoarthritis is very common in India and that its prevalence is more than that of diabetes.

Although men and women are equally affected, the onset of menopause is generally linked with an increase in the risk of arthritis among women in India. The condition is most commonly experienced in the weight bearing joints: knees, hips and lumbar spine.

Sometimes the damage to the cartilage may be so intense that it requires joint replacement.
