Optimist Group Endeavours to Perk Up Spirits on Blue Monday

The optimist group has taken the lead in starting fun measures to perk up spirits on Blue Monday, supposed to be the most depressing day of the year.

As Britain grapples with widespread economic gloom, the Optimists Society sent cheer packages to famously downcast Britons, including finance minister Alistair Darling, deadpan comedian Jack Dee and BBC presenter Jeremy Paxman.

They also organised a free comedy show in central London to help cheer up the city's residents on "Blue Monday".

Though the country has been struggling economically, with tens of thousands of job losses in recent weeks, the Optimists Society believes now is the time for people's personal outlooks to brighten.

"As an optimist you get to bathe luxuriously in your own good-feeling, while also sparking some fun and laughter in others," James Battison, the society's founder, said.

"It's a win-win way to live. I highly recommend it!"

The group claims a mathematical formula which factors in post-Christmas gloom, broken New Year's resolutions, job security and temperature has determined that Blue Monday falls on January 19 this year.
