OPD Visits may Soon be Covered by Health Insurance
Some health insurance companies in India are planning to provide cover for Outpatient Department (OPD) treatments. These are presently not covered in India under health insurance, as OPD treatment does not require hospitalisation.
It has been reported that companies like Bharti Axa General Insurance and Iffco-Tokio are gearing up to develop a product with OPD coverage. They are optimistic that health insurance in India will further grow and that they will be able to provide tailor-made policies for OPD coverage.

Most medical expenses in case of an emergency, are usually borne by the policyholder and there are some cases where these charges – whether OPD or not – are reimbursed by the insurance company in case of hospitalization. Insurers will initially look into control and coordination with patients and clinics to make the new product a success.
