Olympic Restaurant Menus Ban Dog Meat

Dog meat has been removed from all officially designated Olympic restaurants, the official Xinhua News Agency has reported.

Beijing tourism officials are also telling other outlets to discourage consumers from ordering dishes made from dogs.

Dog Meat Eateries in Seoul Face First Hygiene Crackdown
Officials in the South Korean capital Seoul said Monday they will launch their first health inspection of illegal dog meat restaurants this month.

Waiters and waitresses should "patiently" suggest other options to diners who order dog, it said, quoting city tourism bureau Vice Director Xiong Yumei.

Dog meat is known as "Xiangrou" or "fragrant meat" in Chinese and is eaten by some Chinese for its purported health-giving qualities.

Beijing is not the first Olympic host to slap a ban on chomping chow chow.

USDA clear about India's stance on poultry imports
A USDA communiqué has indicated India's stance on Poultry imports, which is seeing an extension in the ban by a 6month period.

South Korea banned dog meat during the 1988 Seoul Olympics by invoking a law prohibiting the sale of "foods deemed unsightly".

After the Olympics, the ban was not strictly enforced.
