Officials Confirm Second Heroin User Died from Anthrax

It has now been confirmed by officials that a second heroin user being treated for anthrax at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary has died.

It has now been confirmed by officials that a second heroin user being treated for anthrax at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary has died. This death follows the one reported last week from Victoria Infirmary.

"There have been no new drug injecting heroin users with infections admitted to hospitals in the west of Scotland since the weekend," said Dr Syed Ahmed, consultant in public health medicine. "I urge all drug injecting heroin users to be extremely alert and to seek urgent medical advice if they experience an infection."

A woman who tested positive for anthrax is also being treated at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Another drug user has died, but it is not yet confirmed if he had anthrax.

"Drug injecting is extremely risky and dangerous. The possible presence of a batch of heroin contaminated with anthrax makes drug injecting even riskier and even more dangerous," Dr Ahmed warned.
