Undergoing gastric bypass surgery not only helps in keeping your waistline in check, but it is also beneficial to your heart, says a new study. According to the study conducted by researchers at the Medical College of Georgia, undergoing a gastric bypass surgery helps in a reduction of weight, which in turn releases the stress on a person’s heart.
The researchers analyzed more than 700 obese people, 400 of whom had opted gastric bypass surgery and studied the performance of their hearts. Echocardiograms were taken two years after the surgery and the researchers found a positive change in the heart’s structure in among the majority of those who had underwent the surgery.
“We know obese people get cardiovascular disease more often than non-obese people. One of the questions out there is: Is it reversible if they lose weight? The answer is yes”, lead researcher Sheldon Litwin said.
