Number of Seats May Increase for Engg, Medical

Aspirants for West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination may feel a sense of relief. There is a likelihood that the number of seats may increase for both engineering and medical courses from 2011 session depending upon the final decision taken by the All India Council for Technical Education ( AICTE) and Medical Council of India ( MCI).

"This year, we have around 10,000 more applications. Last year, there were 1,20,000 applicants compared to 1,30,000 this year. The current number of engineering seats in West Bengal is around 28,500," said chairman of the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations (WBJEE) board, Siddhartha Dutta.

Nearly 46,000 candidates are likely to appear for WBJEE. "The successful among them won't be able to seek admission in government engineering colleges as they are not domicile candidates. Though no new medical colleges are coming up, the existing ones will give admission to more students. The infrastructure of these colleges is being further developed as state health minister Surya Kanta Misra announced last year," added Dutta.
