Number of IVF Babies on the Rise, but Multiple Births Decrease

by Rajashri on Sep 24 2009 9:29 PM

A report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has shown that the number of twins and triplet births from procedures of assisted reproductive technology (ART) has decreased, but more couples are using the procedures to conceive.

Professor Peter Illingworth, the president of the Australian Fertility Society said that the procedure was being used more frequently as new technologies meant the complications associated with it had been nullified.

"Running at a multiple pregnancy rate of only 10 per cent is one of the lowest possible pregnancy rates in the world from IVF," Professor Illingworth said. "It means that the biggest complication which many people associate with fertility treatment, that of multiple pregnancies, is gradually disappearing. "

The report also said that there has been a 10% increase in the use of ART among Australian women and that #3% of all births in the country resulted from such procedures.
