Now, Silicone Wristbands Help Find Out Toxins Harming Your Body
Scientists have come up with silicone wristband that can inform you about the amount of toxin exposure your body is facing. This reading can further aid in finding out an individual’s disease risks.
Researchers have used the commercially available wristbands made of silicone which can absorb a variety of compounds. Through these modified wristbands, scientists measure what all compounds were absorbed. It had absorbed 49 different substances, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), some of which are carcinogenic, and pesticides and consumer products.

At present, people try to figure out the exposure to toxins through heavy equipment or questionnaires which all have some disadvantages.

Kim Anderson from Oregon State University and colleagues said people have been living with pollutants everyday as they breathe, touch and take in varieties of these substances.

These pollutants range from industrial compounds used in disinfectants and upholstery to fragrances and nicotine in consumer products to pesticides. And it’s not easy to zero in on the compounds that can cause diseases. With this smart wristband, individuals can pinpoint at the individual culprit and potential disease risk it causes. It can also help us find the substances which are safe to use.

"We can screen for over 1,000 chemicals that may accumulate in the wristbands," said Anderson.

The study was published in the American Chemical Society's journal Environmental Science & Technology.
