Now, a Skin-Patch Ultrasound to Heal Venous Ulcers
Researchers at Drexel University in Philadelphia have managed to successfully test a skin-patch ultrasound which can heal venous ulcers.
The patch can be applied as a sticking plaster and significantly accelerates tissue repair by delivering low-frequency, low-intensity ultrasound directly to wounds.

The patch was successfully tested on five people suffering from venous ulcers. Weighing just 100gms, the patch derives its power two lithium ion batteries that are fully rechargeable.

Stating that a larger trial involving 20 patients would soon be carried out, Michael Weingarten, chief of vascular surgery at Drexel Medicine, said that the patch offers an effective mode of treatment for such ulcers. “Right now, we rely mostly on passive treatments. With the exception of expensive skin grafting surgeries, there are very few technologies that actively stimulate healing of these ulcers”, he said.
