Novartis to Initiate Recall of OTC Drugs Excedrin and Bufferin

Following complaints over mislabeling and broken pills, Novartis revealed that it will be recalling a number of its over-the-counter drugs including bottles of Excedrin and Bufferin.

The pharmaceutical giant released a statement which said that it will be recalling “Excedrin and NoDoz products with expiration dates of December 20, 2014, or earlier, as well as Bufferin and Gas-X Prevention products with December 20, 2013, or earlier expiration dates.”

The statement added that the company will be shutting down Novartis Consumer Health (NCH) Lincoln, Nebraska facility on a temporary basis in order to accelerate maintenance at the site. The recalls and the upgrade of the facility is expected to cost Novartis around $120 million in the fourth quarter.

Novartis was keen to stress that the recalls were voluntary and precautionary and there have not been any adverse effects reported. “Novartis s taking this action as a precautionary measure, because the products may contain stray tablets, capsules or caplets from other Novartis products, or contain broken or chipped pills”, the statement said.
