Norwalk Virus Spoils The Picnic

Eighteen campers at a family meet near White Rock, B.C., Canada, had to be admitted in hospital after showing symptoms of a virus similar to the Norwalk strain.

Among the number of people who reported nausea, vomiting and diarrhea were a woman, 70, and an eight-year-old child. They were taken to Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock, while others were treated at the scene. Later on Monday, another 16 people were taken to the hospital.

The voluntary quarantine at the campground, which saw twenty-five others being grounded, has since been lifted.

About 140 people were attending the event at the New Westminster Royal Canadian Legion Memorial Camp on the Semiahmoo Indian Reserve over the long weekend.

"I wouldn't want to describe it as a serious situation", says Michael Bernard, a media relations officer with the Fraser Valley Health Authority.

"These symptoms are many that people would encounter during the flu season in winter, with the vomiting and diarrhea. But we take outbreaks like this very seriously and we're looking to try and find the source of it and we're also providing medical care where people need it and request it", he adds.

Meanwhile, local health officials at the scene are trying to determine what caused the outbreak. The Norwalk virus causes stomach pain, diarrhea and vomiting.
