While taking a month long abstinence from alcohol may make you feel better about your health, leading health experts have said that it is a pointless exercise

Instead the experts said that people should make a resolution of staying away from alcohol for a few days every week throughout the year, giving liver some time to heal itself. Andrew Langford, chief executive of the British Liver Trust, said that the liver can heal itself very quickly, usually in about 24 hours provided there is no long lasting damage.
“A one-hit, one-month attempt to achieve long-term liver health is not the way to approach it. You're better off making a resolution to take a few days off alcohol a week throughout the entire year than remaining abstinent for January only”, he said.
