NICE Guidelines Recommend Mediterranean Diet to Heart Attack Survivors
New guidelines released by British health regulatory agency National Institute for Heath and Care Excellence (NICE) suggest that heart attack survivors should eat a Mediterranean style diet and should exercise regularly in order to avoid the risk of premature death.
The guidelines also advised that people should avoid eating oily fish, which are the best source of omega-3 fatty acids, or take omega-3 supplements as the availability of new treatments have made previous guidelines redundant.

“New evidence shows that the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attacks or strokes is very different today because of new treatments that are now available. This means that any impact an oily fish diet may have on preventing further heart attacks or strokes could be minimal”, the draft guidelines said, adding that the new diet should also include more fruits, vegetables and bread while cutting down on the amount of meat, butter and cheese consumed.
