NHS Under the Scanner for Data Handling Error

The NHS in Britain has once again found itself in the crosshairs of data protection watchdog, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), which has criticized the health service agency for data handling error.

The NHS found out that a software glitch has changed the preferred organ donation of more than 400,000 donors in the Organ Donation Register.

The register is maintained by one of the NHS body, NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) and while the error was noticed as recently as in March 2010, it was revealed that the changes went back up to 1999.

Commenting on the error, ICO head of enforcement Mick Gorrill came down heavily on NHSBT but appreciated its willingness to correct the data. "I welcome the NHSBT commitment to correcting the inaccurate data and their willingness to make sure this type of incident does not happen again by introducing a variety of new security measures", Gorrill said.
