NHRC Asks Madhya Pradesh Government to Pay Compensation for Fluorosis-Hit Kids
The Madhya Pradesh government has been asked by the National Human Rights Commission to pay Rs 10,000 each for each of the seven children who suffered from fluorosis after drinking water.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) also called for a compliance report from the state chief secretary along with a proof of payment to the victims.

The NHRC took cognizance of a complaint of a human rights activist that 29 children became physically handicapped in Jasoda Khumji village in Jhabua district after drinking water with high fluoride content.

Responding to the commission's notices, Madhya Pradesh health department's additional secretary said that the valve and pipe defluoridation plant had been stolen and were re-installed and the fluoride in water was within the permissible limit.

However, fluoride was also found in food. The district health officer examined 29 children, of whom seven were found to be physically handicapped.

The commission noted that the administration had taken steps to avoid further recurrence of such incidents but observed that the state government had not disputed that seven children suffered from fluorosis due to the consumption of water with high fluoride.

"It is the duty of the government to provide pure drinking water to citizens and it had failed in doing so. Thus, human rights of the victims had been violated," the NHRC statement added.
