New Treatment for Canine Cancer

An American veterinary oncologist has developed a new chemotherapy treatment in collaboration with Pfizer Animal Health to treat dogs diagnosed with cancer.

So far the only available treatment mode for cancer afflicted dogs has been the use of human medication but the new treatment, already available in Australia, promises to provide a canine-specific treatment for the dogs.

Mesothelioma is a rare, aggressive and deadly cancer of the mesothelial tissue lining the internal organs and is incurable in most of the cases.

The treatment has been developed by Cheryl London who tested it on 145 dogs, many of which were into advanced stages of cancer. Dr London said that the treatment managed to partially or completely reduce the cancer tumors in 43 percent of the dogs.

“If you're a dog owner whose pet's life is threatened by a mast cell tumour, the introduction of this medicine is a significant step forward in not only fighting the disease, but in improving their quality of life”, she said.
