 New Specialty Foot Care Clinic Inaugurated by Indian Sports Champion

A comprehensive, integrated Foot Care Clinic (Podiatry) for people with all types of foot complaints was inaugurated on Tuesday by Indian Junior National Squash champion Ms. Dipika Pallikal.

The Foot care clinic at Mylapore will be a regional center where patients can be treated for a variety of conditions, including in-growing toe nail, fungal infections of the toe, callus and will provide for diagnostic tests such as foot pressure measurements, detection of sensory loss in the foot and many more. This new Foot Care clinic will also provide routine integrated care of the feet of diabetic patients.  The services of the clinic include education of the patient in practical aspects of foot care, early recognition of feet at risk and treatment of various foot problems in people with diabetes. Special advice will also be provided for selection of right type of footwear.

Speaking on the occasion Dr.Vijay Viswanathan, Managing Director, MV Hospital for Diabetes and Diabetes Research Centre said, "One of the major initiatives of the M. V. Hospital for Diabetes has been in the creation of a Foot Care specialty hub, providing specialized care conveniently located to our patients at Mylapore. A team of trained podiatry Surgeons, general surgeons and Nurses, will provide treatment for all types of Diabetic foot complications and expanded foot care services for other patients at this centre".

Foot ulceration in persons with diabetes is a frequent cause for amputation and several studies have shown that regular use of therapeutic footwear, foot education, and diabetic foot care, prevents ulceration, reduces re-ulceration and amputation in persons with diabetes.
