New Solution to Cut Down Electrical Pollution

by VR Sreeraman on Mar 23 2008 12:46 PM

Kerala-based Hykon Power Electronics (P) Ltd, one of the leading players in the Indian power electronics, renewable energy and energy efficient products manufacturing sector, has launched the most up-to-date version of the Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC).

The UPQC is a revolutionary system that enables large-scale establishments like IT parks and other industrial establishments to solve power quality problems, which in turn minimises electrical pollution by reducing voltage imbalances and variations occurring as a result of gap in supply.

Like any other noxious-waste, electricity has become one of the biggest and silent pollutants.

Unlike the most noticeable effects of other pollutions, electrical pollution is the main cause of major equipment failures as well, expressed a company official.

The dynamic voltage restorer is an electronic power conditioner. This helps the losses from process shutdowns and product degradation, protects equipments from voltage fluctuations reduces faults on distribution systems caused by lightning strikes and so on.

According to Christo George, Hykon's Chairman and Managing Director, "Major power quality problems are harmonics and power factor. And the effect of these though vary from instrument to instrument leads to reduced motor life, fall in capacity, breakdowns, over heating and faulty timings".

Hykon Power Conditioners are 'designed to tackle irregularities in load and fluctuations in voltages, maintain grid power factor to unity, ensure uninterrupted production and supply'.

Hykon's UPQC has several salient features such as an Integrated Gate Bipolar Transister (IGBT) based Pulse with Modulation (PWM) Voltage Source Converter (VSC) Technology; maintenance of grid power factor near to unity, bringing down maximum demand (MD-KVA).

Regulating load voltage against sag, eliminating voltage imbalances, maintaining constant output voltage for a wide range of input voltage and fast correction time in less than one millisecond are the other features.

"These advantages are premeditated, to suit the power requirements of IT parks, commercial complexes, semiconductor industries, machine tool plants and process industries that require uninterrupted, quality power supply. The equipment is built fully according to the standards set by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and comply with all standard norms," said Christo George.

Hykon UPQC comprises of two components mainly; viz the STATCOM, a Shunt Active Filter and a Dynamic Voltage Restorer.

The STATCOM, a Static Compensator that takes care of the current injection for reactive power compensation, harmonic current cancellation and continuous monitoring of harmonic current demanded by the load and generates an adaptive waveform.

Maintaining the quality of power has become the most important factor in controlling electrical pollution. Many companies have introduced power controlling systems that can ensure clean electricity. Pollution has become a relative term with all human activities in his environment and "Electrical Pollution" is the most undefined among all varieties of pollutions.
