New Ruling for New York Restaurants

by Savitha C Muppala on Jul 21 2008 5:26 PM

A new ruling, the first of its kind in the United States, binding on restaurants in New York will entail them to display calorie information of items on their menu.

This initiative is much called for, as a study in 2007 found that nearly 30% of people from New York consumed more than 1000 calories at lunch.

It is not surprising that lifestyle related diseases have been on the rise with heart disease and diabetes threatening to reach epidemic proportions.  The only solution lies in educating people and enabling them healthy food choices.

According to health experts, this initiative will help consumers understand the amount of calorie intake in their food, and help them cut down food laden with excessive calories. This initiative is thought to benefit at least 150,000 New Yorkers from Obesity and 30,000 from diabetes in five years, health experts have said

Many of the well known fast food chains like, Burger King, Dunkin Donuts, McDonald’s, Burger King, Applebee's, Subway  and Starbucks  will need to get their act together to comply with the new health law. Those who are caught flouting this rule will need to cough up many thousands of dollars as fine during regular inspections by health authorities.
