The General Medical Council has revealed that their guidance on 'End of Life Treatment in Care' will be modified so as to have doctors ask permission before considering organ donation after death.
Under the new guidelines, doctors will discuss organ donations with terminal patients. It is felt that such a procedure would prevent 1,000 deaths a year as patients wait for transplants."The more doctors and patients have conversations about organ donation the more organs will be donated," said Sharon Burton of the GMC.
However there are concerns among doctors regarding the ethics of such discussions.
