Dr Patki told news reporters at a press meet in Pune that they will be undertaking a pilot study to give sick babies stem cells orally. He added that their research found that breast milk contains 50,000 cells per ml for five days after the birth of the child. This milk is called the colostrum.
After five days, the milk "matures" and contains just 50-100 cells per ml. Therefore it was important to feed babies orally during the first five days especially if they were sick.
Dr Patki also said that their research will soon appear in the journal Human Cell.
