New Helmet That can Detect Hemorrhagic Stroke Developed
A group of Swedish researchers has developed a helmet that can quickly detect whether a patient is suffering from a hemorrhagic stroke.
The helmet, called Strokefinder, has been jointly developed by researchers at Chalmers University of Technology, Sahlgrenska Academy and Sahlgrenska University Hospital who said that it can be fitted into ambulances and could help the paramedics determine the nature of the stroke on the way to the hospital, thereby saving precious minutes before treatment can begin.

The helmet works by making use of microwaves to detect whether a pool of blood is present in the brain and picks up a unique scatter pattern if the patient has suffered a hemorrhagic stroke.

“Our goal with Strokefinder is to diagnose and initiate treatment of stroke patients already in the ambulance. Since time is a critical factor for stroke treatment, the use of the instrument leads to patients suffering less extensive injury. This in turn can shorten the length of stay at hospitals and reduce the need for rehabilitation, thus providing a number of other positive consequences for both the patient and the health care system”, Sahlgrenska University Hospital’s Mikael Elam said.
