New Gel Uses Light to Cure Diabetes in Mice
A new transparent gel that features genetically modified light-sensitive cells has been shown to cure diabetes of mice.
It is believed that it could one day treat disease and monitor toxins in people.

Lead author Myunghwan Choi of Harvard Medical School in Boston and his team created the implantable gel that could guide light under the mouse's skin, New Scientist reported.

In experiments, they impregnated the gel, which is currently in a prototype stage, with many genetically modified cells before implanting it.

The team shone light at the mouse and at the implanted gel with the help of a fibre optic cable that was attached to its head.

The cells in the gel were triggered by the light to produce a compound, which stimulated insulin secretion and stabilised blood glucose levels.
