New Electro-hydraulic Manipulator to Help in Minimally Invasive Surgery

To help doctors perform operations in minimally invasive fashion, scientists have come up with a tiny multi-instrument robotic surgical tool that can reach challenging surgical points with the help of a flexible snake.

Now, open procedures are not required in many cases due to laparoscopic surgery. But still there are certain limitations in certain cases as the instruments used are still long and rigid.

And this problem has made it difficult to perform certain operations in a minimally invasive fashion.

The new robotic tool has been developed by the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, University of Nebraska Lincoln and Center for Advanced Surgical Technology (CAST) at University of Nebraska Medical Center.

The new electro-hydraulic manipulator has four parts within its body. And each part can be pulled out and used on its own. Different manipulators can be fixed to the end of a flexible snake that would take the instruments to the required body part through a natural opening or an incision.
