A new insulin drug needs to be given as injections just 3 times a week to maintain the blood sugar levels for diabetics, with negligible side effects. The research is still in a nascent stage, so the cost of the drug is not clear yet. Yet, this new drug brings hope to people with Type 2 diabetes, who can soon do away with daily doses of insulin injections , some of whom are required to take atleast 4 injections a day.
"The presumption here is if you use a medication less frequently, then people are more likely to take it and remember it, especially as we multitask and try to do so many things every day," said Dr. Yogish C. Kudva, a diabetes specialist and consultant at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester,
According to Diabetes specialist Dr. Vivian Fonseca, more research is needed to ascertain if those who are on this drug will face an elevated risk of low blood sugar. "You give the same dose to the same person every day, and the next morning you get a different result. That is challenging for patients,” Fonesca said.
"The most effective treatment for diabetes, a treatment that is worth doing throughout life, is attention to diet and exercise and working on one's weight. These are difficult to achieve, but even as every new medication comes, there's no getting away from that,"Kudva said.
