New Device Reduces Cancer Pain

WARP 75, a device that was developed for NASA to experiment with plant growth in space, has been effective in reducing pain resulting from chemotherapy and radiation treatments. The device developed by Quantum Devices, of Barneveld, Wisconsin was tested in a two-year clinical trial funded by NASA's Innovative Partnerships Program at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. before it was adjudged to be appropriate in treating pain related to oral mucositis, that is an aftermath of different therapies in treating patients who had undergone bone marrow and stem cell transplants.

The device uses High Emissivity Aluminiferous Luminescent Substrate, or HEALS, a type of LED technology that provides intense light energy. 288 LED's were used and each was supposed to generate the light energy equivalent of being illuminated by 12 suns. Using 670 nanometers of light technology, it was tested out on 20 cancer patients from Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, and 60 cancer patients from the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital and the Children's Hospital of Alabama, Birmingham.
