A British charity organization has warned that more and more mothers are turning to alcohol in order to cope with the pressures of raising children and warned that such a step could be putting thousands of children at the risk of suffering from depression and anxiety. In the report titled “Bottling It Up: The Next Generation”, Turning Point estimated that more than 2.6 million children were living with parents who were suffering from a drinking problem. According to the organization, more than 12,100 people had enrolled in its alcohol treatment services between 2010 and 2011 and more than half of them were parents with more than 36 percent of them being mothers.
The charity warned that the parents were drinking very high levels of alcohol and revealed that on an average, they drank around 30 units per day, which is 10 times more than the recommended limit.
“Some said a lack of support from their partners was a trigger for their drinking. Others were drinking at least three nights a week and consuming more than 70 units - the equivalent of nearly eight bottles of wine”, the report said.
