Mum Swears by Coffee Treatment for ADHD-Affected Son
A mother of a 7-year old boy who, she believes, is suffering from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has started giving her son two cups of coffee everyday rather than opt for medical treatment that could cause side effects.
Christie Haskel discovered that her son, Rowan, was displaying all signs of a classic case of ADHD. However instead of taking him to a clinic for diagnosis, she searched the internet for possible treatments for her son that did not cause any side effects.

Rather than a medicine or even a herbal treatment, she started to give her son two cups of coffee every day. Haskel, who also writes on a blog known as The Stir, said that the coffee has made her son calmer and he is even starting to sit down and do his homework properly.

However medical experts have warned mothers who have children with ADHD not to think that coffee is a good substitute for medicines. The experts added that not only has it been proven that coffee has a positive effect on ADHD symptoms, but giving children caffeine could backfire since increasing levels of caffeine in the body could be harmful to the children.

Speaking to the ABC News, the chief of psychiatry at the Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit, Dr David Rosenberg said, “Caffeine is not the answer for real, bonafide ADHD. I don't want parents to be deluded into a false sense of security that if I just go to the local Starbucks, I'm going to cure my son or daughter's ADHD.”
