MRSA can Be Eliminated by Avoiding Intravenous Injections

by Rajshri on May 9 2008 3:20 PM

Winchester and Eastleigh Healthcare NHS Trust has successfully managed to reduce MRSA infection in its hospitals by avoiding administering intravenous injections.

The Trust said that instead they were using cannulae, which had allowed doctors to monitor for the signs of infection. Since November last year this practice has been in use and there have been no new instances of MRSA cases.

"It is well known that cannulae can cause bloodstream infections, such as MRSA, which is why we were so keen to make these changes," said Dr Chris Gordon, consultant physician and divisional director for medicine at the Trust.

The Trust also said that MRSA infections could be combated nationwide if all other Trusts followed the same practice.
