MoU to Prevent Drug Trafficking

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed by India, Pakistan to reduce drug demand and tackle the cross-border trafficking in narcotics.

The Pakistan side was headed by Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) Director-General Major-General Syed Shakeel Hussain, while Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Director-General O.P.S. Malik led the Indian delegation.

Under the accord, India and Pakistan will cooperate with each other in preventing, suppressing and investigating drug trafficking and exchange literature on laws, rules and best practices for curbing the menace, the Dawn reports.

The two countries will provide legal assistance to each other when considered appropriate and necessary.

Both sides agreed to exchange information of operational, technical and general nature and to communicate operational intelligence.

A statement issued at the end of the talks said that the two countries shared their concern over the growing menace of narcotic drugs, and described the cooperation and information sharing between the ANF and NCB as satisfactory.

The Indian delegation later held a meeting with Narcotics Control Secretary Sohail Ahmad, who said that Pakistan had evolved a roadmap for consultations with all stakeholders.
