Motion Capture Technology can be Used to Assess Movements of Stroke Patients

A team of Swedish researchers has found that motion capture technology, used widely in video game and film industries, can be used to assess everyday movements of stroke patients. The study was conducted by researchers at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg in Sweden who used the technology among 100 people, both stroke patients and healthy controls, and filmed their everyday movements.

The researchers found that analyzing the 3D animation of the movements provided a completely new level of detail in assessing the mobility of stroke patients, which could be used to provide a more effective rehabilitation to the patients.

“Computer technology provides better and more objective documentation of the problem in terms of the everyday life of the patient than what human observation can provide. Our results show that computerized motion analysis could be a complement to a physician's clinical diagnosis and an important tool in diagnosing motion problems”, lead researcher Margit Alt Murphy said.
