Out the French drinkers who were surveyed, 71 percent said that they didn't know much about wine no while these 43 percent admitted to know nothing at all. Only 3 percent suggested they were well versed in the subject and 26 eprcent said they "knew enough."

Rodolphe Wartel, director of Terre de Vins, said that French people find the wine world complicated and dread putting across their opinion, and they intended to show them that the job, on the contrary, was "quite simple."

He added that it was surprising to find that 51 percent of people thought youngsters should learn about wine through tastings at the age of 17 to fight binge-drinking, as the legal age to consume alcohol was 18.

Earlier in 2014, the French parliament declared that wine would be designated part of the country's "cultural, gastronomic and French landscape."
