Model Diagnosed With Rare, Incurable Disease After Being Stung by a Wasp
A model and dancer who has featured in a number of pop videos discovered that she is suffering from a rare and incurable disease after she was bitten by an insect.
Clare Fray, who appeared in videos featuring The Spice Girls and Julian Lennon, was stung by a wasp and when she was being treated for the bite, doctors found that she was suffering from a rare genetic condition, known as alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, which may leave her requiring a lung or liver transplant in the future.

The condition leads to development of some of the common symptoms of lung damage, such as breathlessness, wheezing and coughing, are currently there is no cure available with the treatment offered based on the progression of the condition.

Fray said that dancing has helped her remain fit and the only thing she can now do is to take care of herself. “I was referred to a genetic counselor who described all the horrible things that might happen, and all the genetics involved. Although I had spent a lot of time in smoky clubs, which is very bad for someone with alpha-1, I’m under no doubt that being fit and dancing has helped me keep good health. Now all I can do is look after myself as best I can.”
