Michelle Obama Asks Food Giants to Help Curb Child Obesity

by Rajshri on Mar 17 2010 11:05 PM

Michelle Obama has called on food giants to take measures to help curb child obesity. Speaking at a meeting of the Grocery Manufacturers Association on Tuesday, Mrs Obama asked manufacturers to ensure that salt and sugar were controlled in their products.

Mrs Obama has already taken steps to make curbing child obesity a national priority. She has spoken to schools and nutrition groups in this matter.

"We need you not to just tweak around the edges but entirely rethink the products you are offering, the information that you provide about these products, and how you market those products to our children," she said.

Margo Wootan, director of nutrition policy at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, said the participation of the first lady would help as food companies will realize the seriousness of the issue.
