Michael Douglas is on the Road to Recovery
Radiation and chemotherapy has worked wonders on Actor Michael Douglas, 66, for whom seven weeks of the treatment has removed any trace of the cancer tumor in his throat.

According to throat cancer expert, Gady Har-El, MD, chair of head and neck surgery at New York's Lenox Hill Hospital, this is an optimistic development and augurs well for the actor's health.

According to doctors, the actor has responded very well to treatment which means the base-of-tongue tumor cannot be detected during physical examination or during imaging with CT, MRI, or functional PET scans.

"Obviously Mr. Douglas is not completely out of the woods because there is a chance of tumor recurrence. As time goes by, his odds get better. If he has no evidence of disease in the next three years, his chances of cure are extremely high," Har-El said.

Physical examination will be done on the actor every month, and scans will be conducted every 6 to 12 months.

The actor's oropharyngeal cancer was detected at a late stage when the tumor was too big for surgical removal.
