Metal Hip Implants Linked to Poisoning
Health regulators in Britain are launching an investigation into metal hip implants that could potentially increase the risk of poisoning in patients.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced that it will be conducting an investigation into reports that metal-on-metal hip implants could disintegrate and destroy muscles and also leak metal into the blood stream. The investigation comes after surgeons reported a 50 percent failure rate in this type of implants.

However the MHRA was quick to say that majority of the patients with hip implants are at a low risk of experiencing any problems. “On the evidence currently available, the majority of patients implanted with metal on metal hip replacements are at low risk of developing any serious problems. We are continuing to closely monitor all evidence. This needs more analysis before any conclusions can be drawn and further advice given”, a spokesman for the agency said.
