Mental Diseases Linked to Recession on the Rise

by Rajshri on Apr 1 2010 9:05 PM

The on-going recession revealed yet another part of its impact on the general population after a new report revealed that the number of depression-related cases has risen sharply last year.

According to the report released by Roehampton University and Elizabeth Finn Care, more than 71 percent of people who lost their jobs due to recession have suffered from depression while more than half of them admitted to symptoms of stress and anxiety.

Dr Joerg Huber of the Roehamptom University said that the percentage of people experiencing depression was higher among the middle class compared to those from higher or lower economic status.

“What makes our findings worrying is the high percentage of people reporting symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress. This applies even more to those who have lost their job or experienced a major loss of income”, Dr Huber added.
