Teenage pregnancies have been at a record high in the last decade. Since 1998, there has been an increase in the number of pregnancies among girls below 16 years.
Most pregnancies occurring below 18 years of age have fortunately ended in abortion.
According to reports, nearly 50% of underage pregnancies in the previous year ended in abortion - girls for the first time have made a conscious choice of abortion instead of choosing to become 'teenage' mothers.
The number of abortions in England and Wales has touched a record 200,000. Sex education and accessibility to free contraceptives have been some of the steps taken by the government to reduce teenage pregnancies.
