Medical Council of India Rejects Proposal for Extra MBBS Seats

Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH), Tamilnadu, India, submitted a proposal to the Medical Council of India (MCI) requesting an increase in the MBBS seats from the existing 150 to 250 for the academic year 2015-16.

The Executive Committee of the MCI recommended to the Centre not to issue permission to the CMCH to increase its seats to 250 after the inspection and recommended the cancellation of recognition to the CMCH to offer MBBS course.

Edwin Joe, Dean, CMCH, met the Union Health Ministry officials in New Delhi and explained the facilities at CMCH, the ministry recommended to the MCI to consider permitting the CMCH to continue offering MBBS course without an increase in seats.

CMCH offers treatment for nearly 10,000 patients on any given day from not only the Western districts of Tamil Nadu but also even the border districts of Kerala.
