Maxwell Air Force Base Celebrates National Disability Employment Awareness Month

The US Congress established October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) in 1988.

The initiative aims to raise awareness about disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of workers with disabilities.

Intellectual disability is a developmental delay that is significantly below average compared to peers, in terms of intelligence and adaptive skills.

The theme for the awareness month 2015 is “My Disability is One Part of Who I Am.”

“This year’s theme encapsulates the important message that people with disabilities are just that – people. And like all people, we are the sum of many parts, including our work experiences. Disability is an important perspective we bring to the table, but, of course, it’s not the only one,” noted Ms. Jennifer Sheehy, Acting Assistant Secretary of Labor for Disability Employment Policy.

The mission at Maxwell could not be done without the contributions from our team members who are living with disabilities, noted Colonel Andrea Tullos, 42 Air Base Wing commander.

A committee, chaired by Major Deborah Miller, Holm Center, is developing the NDEAM program for Maxwell AFB for presentation on October 28, 2015.

Ms. Anna Taylor, Business Consultant for the State of Alabama Rehabilitation Services, will conduct workstations where people can learn more about disabilities.

One dictionary defines disability as a physical or mental condition that limits a person’s movements, senses, or activities. Disabilities can be both physical and mental. They could deal with someone who has to use a machine or wheelchair to get around, or someone that has a issue with communicating with others.
