Many Young People Suffering from Deadly Blood Clots

Data obtained by the thrombosis charity Lifeblood from the Office of National Statistics, shows that hundreds of young people are succumbing to blood clots.

Serious blood clots occur in the leg in a condition called deep vein thrombosis (DVT). It was thought that DVT was a problem usually seen after surgery. However Lifeblood found that between 2005 and 2008, 1,075 people aged 40 or under died from blood clots.

Lifeblood director and haematologist professor Beverley Hunt said that people should get even slight pain in the leg checked. "If the pain is persistent and you can't explain it and it's been there for a couple of days, see your doctor," she added. "The trouble is that these figures have made us all think again about what constitutes the symptoms of a DVT and we are going to have to do some more research."

The incidence of leg clots is increasing at an alarming rate and people should take care to consult their doctors at the slightest sign of worry.
