While there are medical reasons that necessitate such a surgery, including congenital condition like intersex and the tearing and stretching of the labia due to childbirth or accident, most of the women in New Zealand are opting for the surgery as they are unhappy the appearance of their genitals.

This trend was highlighted in a study published by the Journal of Sexual Medicine in 2008 revealing that around 31 percent of women underwent the surgery for purely cosmetic reasons.
