Many Newlywed Men Suffer from ED

Many studies have suggested that men who suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED) have an underlying problem like diabetes. However most cases were considered psychological until recently. Now doctors at the PGI in Chandigarh say that 40% of men who arrive at their clinic are newly weds.

"In the past, couples would wait for years before seeking medical help. By that time, so many of them would be so dejected that divorce seemed the only option. However, now wives often drag their husbands into the clinic within the first week of marriage," said Dr Santosh Kumar, assistant professor at the department of Urology, PGI.

Diseases like diabetes, thyroid disorders, injury to private parts and vascular and neurological diseases are linked to ED, but it is only recently that men are actively seeking treatment. Emotional stress is another facto that can cause impotency.

"Over 50% impotent men put off seeking help for a year or more. By this time, their marriage runs into trouble and separation stares them in their faces. And even when they do seek help, they are consulted by doctors who are uncomfortable with the subject or quick to blame it all on age," Dr Kumar says.

However most cases are curable and men must not put off seeking help.
